Hemp For Breakfast: The Easy Guide To A Delicious Hemp (& CBD) Filled Breakfast

We’ve put together a quick guide to eating hemp for breakfast, so you can start your most important meal of the day with this nutritional powerhouse.

Hemp hearts and CBD oil are interesting ingredients, in that they are really easy to incorporate to your everyday foods. With hemp hearts, you’ll see it’s a simple additive to the dishes. It’s as easy as putting them into a batter, or even just sprinkling them on top of the dish. With the CBD oil, it’s slightly more difficult to incorporate into your dishes but we’ll give you some simple tips.

HEMP FOR BREAKFAST: THE BENEFITS OF ADDING HEMP & CBD TO YOUR MORNING

Hemp is great addition to so many dishes. It will provide you with all of the essential amino acids and is a major source for plant-based protein. The best part is that hemp is extremely easy to incorporate into your diet. You can simply sprinkle hemp hearts (hulled hemp seeds) on top of your meals like salads or rice bowls or throw it into your blender to infuse your protein-shakes with hemp power. We recently looked at how hemp is great for keto diets and explained how to make your own hemp milk. However, hemp is an easy addition to almost any diet.

A pan of scrambled eggs with added herbs. Creating a delicious hemp breakfast might be as simple as adding hemp hearts or infusing CBD oil into the butter you use to make eggs.

Creating a delicious hemp breakfast might be as simple as adding hemp hearts or infusing CBD oil into the butter you use to make eggs.

CBD can also be incorporated into your mornings. Not to be confused with THC, the main cannabinoid compound in psychoactive cannabis, these ingredients are completely legal and will not get you high. CBD can ease symptoms of pain and anxiety and generally create a more balanced day. CBD can be found as oils, extracts, tinctures and even edibles. There are even CBD breakfast bars! You can even mix it into your morning coffee, if these recipes don’t appeal.

Since CBD is a liquid, you have to incorporate it into other liquids used. Cannabinoids also bind with fats in cooking. The easiest way to cook with CBD is to infuse the supplement into things like butter, maple syrup, and even into your cooking oil. This process is generally easy, and you can even make it ahead of time. We used Meta Hemp CBD oil for these test recipes (see our Meta Hemp review here!) but you can use any quality CBD oil you prefer.

Below are three of our favorite recipes incorporating hemp & CBD!

PANCAKES WITH CBD-INFUSED MAPLE SYRUP

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of your choice of pancake batter
  • Full spectrum CBD oil
  • ½ cup of pure maple syrup
  • Non-stick spray

Directions:

  1. With this recipe, you’ll want to first make your batter to have it done so you can prepare everything else. Depending on your pancake batter, you might need to add eggs and milk, but sometimes all you’ll need is water.
  2. When stirring, make sure to stir until the batter is smooth and all of the lumps are gone. If you’re adding milk, do it slowly as you stir. This will make your pancakes extra fluffy.
  3. To make the CBD infused maple syrup, pour the syrup into a small saucepan and heat on low. After it’s brought up to temperature, add your desired amount of CBD/Hemp oil.
  4. Continue heating on low for about 5 minutes and set aside.
  5. To make pancakes, it helps to make a pancake assembly station, with batter to the left, the pan in front of you, and your serving plate to the right.
  6. Spray non-stick spray and then pour batter until you get the desired size of pancake. Every minute or so, continuously check the bottom until it’s golden brown. Once it’s cooked, flip the pancake to cook the other side. Again, continuously check so you don’t overcook the pancake.

After that, you’re done in creating your delicious pancake with CBD-infused maple syrup! You can eat it as is, or add things like hemp hearts, berries, nuts, and whipped cream to supercharge the dish.

THE ULTIMATE CBD EGG SCRAMBLE

Ingredients:

  • Four eggs
  • ¼ cup of milk
  • ¼ stick of butter
  • Spinach/Kale
  • Full spectrum CBD oil
  • Handful of grape tomatoes
  • ¼ Large Onion, chopped
  • Salt, Pepper, Chili Flakes, Smoked Paprika to taste

Directions:

This is an awesome recipe if you’re short on time, and you want to make a quick & easy breakfast scramble to start your day off right!

  1. We start by preparing vegetables. Quickly chop onions, ready spinach and grape tomatoes. Set these aside.
  2. Heating up your pan with butter over a medium heat. Add CBD/Hemp Oil with the butter. While we wait for the pan to get up to temperature, we’ll prepare our eggs.
  3. Whip four eggs in a small bowl until they are uniform and have a little bit of foam around the edges. Mix in the milk while you whip your eggs. This allows for a fluffier and creamier omelet.
  4. Once the eggs are whipped and vegetables ready, make sure to have your spices nearby.
  5. With the pan up to temperature, we’ll add in our vegetables first. Cook for approximately 2-3 minutes.
  6. After the vegetables have cooked for a little bit, add the eggs and start to scramble them.
We made a hemp breakfast: hemp heart yogurt parfait, pancakes with CBD maple syrup, and CBD-infused veggie egg scramble.

Making scrambled eggs is fairly easy, but make sure to not overcook the eggs! The cooking process should only take about a minute or so and be sure to keep the ingredients constantly moving with your spatula.

HEMP BREAKFAST PARFAIT

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup of yogurt
  • Granola
  • Your choice of berry (blackberry, blueberry, raspberry, etc.)
  • Honey
  • Hemp hearts

This is the easiest of all the recipes, simply gather all the ingredients and stack them in a bowl! You can add to this recipe by adding in flax seeds and chia seeds with the hemp hearts to create a trifecta of awesome plant based nutrition!

Hemp Craft Beer & The Breweries That Make It

Hemp craft beer is making a name for itself, with the help of a handful of pioneering American breweries. It began with New Belgium’s “The Hemperor,” but now other breweries both large and small are entering the hemp and cannabis market.

Hemp craft beer is making a name for itself, with the help of a handful of pioneering American breweries.

There are many products that utilize hemp; clothing, skincare products, CBD oils & tinctures, and hemp-enhanced edibles, but there remains a noticeable absence of hemp in the alcohol industry. Most notably, the craft beer market, a market that’s notorious for experimentation to produce unique flavors.

Thanks to unmet market needs and the relaxing regulations towards hemp & cannabis products, breweries such as New Belgium have initiated their foray into the hemp craft beer market. Upon their release of “The Hemperor,” the Colorado brewery gained nationwide media attention due to this trailblazing and delicious beverage.

A pint glass of dark beer sits on a rustic bar top in a darkened bar. While hemp makes an enticing beer ingredient, craft hemp beer brewers face legal and regulatory hurdles before they can bring their brews to market.

While hemp makes an enticing beer ingredient, craft hemp beer brewers face legal and regulatory hurdles before they can bring their brews to market.

Previously, we reviewed The Hemperor and interviewed a local maker of hemp wine. The recent growth of hemp craft beer left us eager to look deeper into this enticing topic.

THE CURRENT STATE OF THE HEMP CRAFT BEER MARKET

Other breweries looking to imitate New Belgium’s success must fight a gauntlet of obstacles.

Thanks to the difficulty of state and federal regulations, New Belgium had to experiment with many iterations of The Hemperor. This is because the use of hemp flowers & leaves in products is forbidden by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The use of CBD is also forbidden in alcohol products with national distribution.

Eventually, the brewery landed on hulled hemp seeds as the base for The Hemperor. Hulled hemp seeds, better known as hemp hearts, are an ingredient that can be found in your local supermarket. Hemp hearts are versatile, and can be used in many applications such as making hemp milk. Now, The Hemperor is available in all states except Kansas (party poopers if you ask us).

With the success of New Belgium, major beer companies are looking to get a slice of the pie. Corona & Modelo manufacturer Constellation Brands, Blue Moon founder Keith Villa, and Molson Coors are some of the notable names looking to dip their toes into hemp and cannabis beer. Constellation Brands and Molson Coors partnered with Canadian cannabis producers, while Keith Villa is working with a producer in his home state of Colorado.

BREWERIES THAT MAKE HEMP CRAFT BEER

New Belgium's The Hemperor hemp craft beerNew Belgium Brewing: The Hemperor

New Belgium are experiencing a moment as the most recognized hemp craft beer trailblazer. Released in April of this year, New Belgium have already experienced an instant success with The Hemperor. While they haven’t released a statement with future plans, one can almost be sure that they will release more hemp infused products.

Sweetwater Brewing Company 420 Strain G13 IPA craft hemp beerSweetwater Brewing Company: 420 Strain G13 IPA

This Atlanta based brewery has long been a fan of cannabis culture. Their best seller is the aptly named “420 Extra Pale Ale.” This past June, the brewery finally released their first (of seemingly many to come) hemp-enhanced beers. Their new beverage, “420 Strain G13 IPA,” mimics the famous G13 strain of psychoactive cannabis in terms of smell and taste, without the high. Sweetwater achieves this by infusing the pale ale with hemp, hops, terpenes, and other organic materials.

In a statement in the New York Times, co-founder Freddy Bensch says: “We think the drinker and the cannabis consumer are the same person.”

Bensch means that by releasing their G13 product, the brewery is tapping into a market that’s already connected to their traditional target-market. It’s worth noting that in just a couple of months, the G13 IPA has become their 2nd highest selling product.

Lagunitas Hi Fi Hops Cannabis Craft BeerLagunitas Brewing: Hi-Fi Hops

With the recreational use of psychoactive cannabis becoming legal, California-based Lagunitas Brewery pounced on the new market. Releasing their “Hi-Fi Hops” product line, in collaboration with CannaCraft (a cannabis-extract manufacturer), they offer cannabis-infused sparkling water drinks. Hi-Fi Hops products can only be found in medical marijuana dispensaries in California. While a little more left-field, the introduction of a cannabis-infused sparkling water opens the conversation up from merely a beer product, into a whole slew of hemp, CBD & THC-infused beverages.

Lagunitas is at the forefront of the fusion of cannabis into traditional drinks.

WHERE HEMP CRAFT BEER FITS INTO CRAFT BEER CULTURE

So where does hemp craft beer stand within existing craft beer culture?

Craft beer culture is already at the forefront of counterculture. Craft beers began with mad-scientist brewers looking for new flavors in unconventional ingredients. Long synonymous with bearded, beanie-wearing hipsters, craft beer culture is comfortable standing out. In fact, being different is the greatest asset of a craft beer. One needs only to look at the ingredients and artwork on their bottles to recognize this.

A photo showing three different beers of different colors in pint glasses. The success of New Belgium is bringing a host of new hemp craft beer to market, as well as entries from some larger brewers too.

The success of New Belgium is bringing a host of new hemp craft beer to market, as well as entries from some larger brewers too.

Cannabis and hemp belong to the same family of plants as hops. Breweries such as New Belgium and Sweetwater are using the green & herbal notes of the hemp plant to enhance their IPAs, which already tout flavors of bitterness, freshness and hoppiness.

So, we think that hemp craft beers will fit right in! In fact, we believe it’ll do more than fit in, we think they will thrive. The same hipster beanie-wearing dudes who drink IPAs are probably already using hemp in their breakfasts or daily supplements; so why not have hemp with their beer?

Hemp Milk: How To Make Your Own Hemp Milk (& Why You Should)

Hemp Milk is a powerhouse of nutrition, and it’s so easy to make. Made from hemp hearts, water, salt and natural sweetener, anyone can make hemp milk at home in their blender.

Hemp Milk is a powerhouse of nutrition, and it’s so easy to make.

If you’re a busy person, eating healthy, well-balanced meals tailored to your current diet can be very difficult. Lots of us are preparing food in advance, to help us survive the oncoming assault of tasks that will burden us throughout the week. Even so, we still need some fast, nutritious add-ins.

Hemp milk is a simple and tasty addition to almost any diet. You can use it to add nutrition to everyday foods. Hemp milk is great in protein shakes, you can substitute it for dairy milk in cereal, or simply drink it directly with a little added honey.

A sealed mason jar of fresh hemp milk sits on a windowsill. Hemp milk is easy to make with just a few ingredients, and fun to customize too!

Below we outline the advantages of adding hemp milk into your diet, and how to make Ministry of Hemp’s version!

WHAT ARE THE NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS OF HEMP MILK?

Hemp is a superfood among superfoods. The little shelled seed is easily digestible, nutrient rich, and is a tasty addition to pretty much everything. Hemp seeds contain all 10 essential amino acids, which are highly-important because our bodies cannot produce them. In addition to the Omega 3 & 6 Fatty Acids, the seeds contain plant-based fats, antioxidants, fiber, and even natural chlorophyll. On top of all, the seeds are extremely easy to digest, requiring very low amounts of energy to digest. As we’ve written about before, hemp is perfect for keto diets.

This is what makes hemp milk so special, because it carries all the nutritional benefits of hemp seeds in a different form. Hemp milk makes it even easier to consume this little superseed.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN HEMP MILK

All you’ll need is the following ingredients:

  • Shelled hemp seeds, also known as hemp hearts (1 Cup)
  • Water (3 cups)
  • Salt (a pinch)
  • Sweetener (to taste)

We like to use pitted dates or organic raw honey to sweeten our hemp milk. Add as much as you want for these ingredients, as it depends on your taste. There’s lot of other possible ingredients, but these are key. Everything else added will be for flavor and personal taste, which is the best part!

Step 1: Put the shelled hemp seeds (1 cup) into your blender.

Since we’re using shelled hemp seeds, there is no need for us to soak the seeds or strain them after blending. I highly suggest using this since it is easier to make and has virtually no mess.

Step 2: Put the water into the blender.

This step is important for the thickness of your milk. I like to use a ratio of 3:1, water to hemp seeds. If you would like a thicker milk, use less water, and vice versa. Keep in mind that the more you make hemp milk (trust me you’ll want to make it all the time) the better you’ll become balancing the ratio.

Step 3: Add the salt for taste and as a preservative. Add your chosen sweetener and any other optional ingredients.

Step 4: Blend the ingredients together for 20-30 seconds.

And that’s it!

To make your own hemp milk, you'll combine hemp hearts, water, salt, and a natural sweetener in your blender. Seen here in bowls are fresh hemp milk, hemp seeds, and shelled hemp seeds (hemp hearts).

To make your own hemp milk, you’ll combine hemp hearts, water, salt, and a natural sweetener in your blender.

SOME FUN WAYS TO CUSTOMIZE YOUR HEMP MILK

Aside from honey and pitted dates, you have a plethora of options for flavoring. You can use vanilla & cinnamon for a horchata-inspired milk. We’ve tried chocolate syrup for chocolate hemp milk, and you can even use strawberry syrup for strawberry flavored milk.

As with any recipe, keep practicing and work to make it your own. And in no time, you’ll be a hemp milk master!

Hemp For Keto: Why Hemp Protein Is Perfect For The Keto Diet

If you’re doing the ketogenic diet, and you haven’t tried hemp for keto, you’re missing out. Hemp seeds are perfect for keto, because they’re high in amino acids, fiber and essential fatty acids.

If you’re doing the ketogenic diet, and you haven’t tried hemp for keto, you’re missing out.

The ketogenic diet became a hit by flipping the popular notion of fat being detrimental to health on its head. So, how does hemp protein play into all of this?

Understanding the food that you eat and learning how it affects your body is important. Food directly affects your mood, energy levels, and most importantly, your health. Many modern health issues can be traced back to an incorrect food source and unhealthy eating habits. And with the emergence of processed foods, eating healthy has never been harder.

That’s why something like the keto diet has become so popular. Keto is an eating pattern that focuses on the omission of carbohydrates and the increased consumption of fats through oils and nuts. It’s a diet that questions our typical food source, and challenges us to try a different energy source for our bodies. Hemp is a perfect way to support this low-carb diet. Below are foods & recipes to incorporate more hemp into your diet, and get you those all-important fats while minimizing the caloric and carbohydrate cost.

Read more below on how hemp for keto is a match made in heaven.

Hemp for keto is a perfect choice due to hemp protein's incredible nutritional profile.

HEMP FOR KETO: HEMP IS YOUR NEW FAVORITE SUPERFOOD

Hemp seeds are a great option to take advantage of hemp’s unique nutritional profile for your keto diet. The seeds have the same advantages as hemp oil, as the oil is derived from the pressing of the seeds.

Hemp seeds/oil are rich in Gamma-Linolenic acid (GLA) that help create prostaglandins, which are chemicals that help smooth muscles, control inflammation and body temperature. Foods that contain GLA help people with blood pressure, obesity, heart disease and more.

The Ketogenic diet requires a low-carbs, so all foods derived from grain are out of the question. Which means no bread or pasta. This is a problem because most meals use grains as filler. Hemp seeds are an easy fix to this problem. Aside from adding cauliflower and broccoli to your diet, you can use hemp for keto because hemp seeds are especially satiating due to their high fiber content.

Hemp is great in achieving heart health. A healthy heart requires less sugar, plant-based proteins, and good natural fats. Hemp seeds contain all these things. The regular consumption of hemp seeds, along with whole foods that are nutrient-dense and have good fats will make your heart very happy!

The best part about hemp is its nutritional profile. One ounce of hemp seeds contains nine grams of protein, twelve grams of fat, and two grams of fiber. It also contains all twenty amino acids and all nine of the essential amino acids that our bodies can’t produce.

Hemp is a superfood. Not only is it high in protein and natural fats, but it’s low in calories and carbohydrates. It can help you feel fuller and taste delicious, all while coming from a completely natural source.

Smoothie ingredients on a counter, including hemp seeds. The keto diet focuses on low carbohydrate and high fat consumption, making hemp for keto a great option to ensure you get plenty of vital amino acids.

HEMP RECIPES FOR THE KETO DIET

Hemp is not just a nutrient dense super-food, it can also be a tasty addition to your favorite recipes. A chewy and nutty tasting seed, it provides a great texture and taste to your dishes. Aside from the seed and oil additives, hemp is also made into milk and cheese substitutes. Listed below are some examples of delicious hemp for keto recipes!

There’s nothing better than starting your day off with a delicious breakfast. This recipe is not only tasty, but extremely easy to make! Perfect for when you’re still half-asleep and just need a little something to get you kickstarted for the day. An awesome mix of chia, flax, and hemp seed (a trio you need to be using), paired with creamy yogurt, crunchy granola and fresh blueberries then topped off with all-natural agave syrup.

If you’re on the keto diet be sure to substitute the granola with avocado or more hemp seeds and use plain yogurt (not that fat-free stuff).

Almost everyone loves Mediterranean food, so this hemp seed tabouli recipe will hit the spot. Parsley is chock-full of folic acid, vitamins A & C, and antioxidants. The recipe calls for a heaping dose of hemp-seeds, and the dressing is a mixture of lemon juice, garlic, olive oil and salt.

Packed with 5 tablespoons of hemp seeds, or about 60 grams of fat, this is already a perfect hemp for keto recipe with no changes.

If you’re lazy like me, nutrient-dense smoothies are your go-to when you don’t feel like cooking. This recipe contains classic smoothie ingredients such as blueberry, bananas, and oatmeal. Then packs a nutrient-heavy punch with it’s hemp oil additive. Add another banana to thicken the smoothie which makes it more filling.

For Keto, I suggest replacing the water in the recipe with coconut milk or hemp milk and omitting granola.

CBD Cooking Made Easy: Tips For Cooking With CBD

CBD cooking is easier than you might think, whether you’re craving sweet treats or savory snacks. Cooking with CBD oil not only helps to cover up the flavor of the compound, but also makes the overall process more fun.

CBD cooking is easier than you might think, whether you’re craving sweet treats or savory snacks.

Cannabidiol, or CBD, oil has become increasingly popular for its potential therapeutic effects, ranging from stress management to skincare. CBD is available in a variety of forms, including pills, capsules, and edibles, but oils and tinctures allow for more customized CBD dosage and the ability to easily add cannabidiol to your cooking. Cooking with CBD oil not only helps to cover up the flavor of the compound, but also makes the overall process more fun.

CBD cooking and baking is easy, but it can still be a bit tricky for first-timers. Here are some tips and recipes to get you started.

TRY BOTH SWEET & SAVORY CBD COOKING

Most recipes that include CBD oil tend to focus on sweets and baked goods, and for good reason. It’s generally easier to cover up the inherent bitterness of CBD with sugar or chocolate. However, CBD oils can be just as effectively used in savory dishes.

CBD needs to be infused into a fat or oil-based ingredient, like butter, ghee, lard, or coconut oil, before it can be used in your cooking. In some recipes, alcoholic spirits (vodka, rum, whiskey) can replace the fat component. Avoid wine and beer, which won’t act as great carriers for CBD oil because they are water-based.

From sweet to savory, CBD cooking doesn't have to be complicated.

From sweet to savory, CBD cooking doesn’t have to be complicated. CBD-infused cookies make a delicious treat.

Recipe: CBD Chocolate Chip Cookies

  • 0.5 oz. unflavored CBD oil
  • 3 cups of flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp. hot water
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Mix your wet ingredients (white sugar, brown sugar, softened butter, and CBD oil) until creamy. Beat in the eggs and stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. Add flour to the batter until fully combined. Dissolve the baking soda in the hot water and stir into the batter along with the salt.
  4. Fold in the chocolate chips
  5. Place parchment paper onto a baking sheet and spoon batter onto the sheet, leaving about 2 inches between each dollop.
  6. Bake for 10 minutes or until cookies appear golden brown.

MORE TIPS FOR COOKING WITH CBD

Temperature matters in CBD cooking

CBD can be a bit of a fickle ingredient when it comes to temperatures. Warming the oil can increase CBD’s effectiveness, but higher temperatures can kill some of the active components. CBD will begin to evaporate at temperatures higher than 320 to 356 degrees Fahrenheit.

Do not place your CBD oil on direct heat. Heating the oil at too high temperatures can result in the loss of terpenes, which are compounds that work in conjunction with CBD to increase its overall effects. Heating CBD too high also tends to bring out more of its bitterness.

Sometimes, less is more in CBD cooking: Start with a smaller amount of cannabidiol when starting out at cooking with CBD.

Sometimes, less is more in CBD cooking: Start with a smaller amount of cannabidiol when starting out at cooking with CBD.

Start small, don’t use too much CBD

When you first start cooking with CBD oil, it’s far too easy to add too much CBD to a recipe, which usually leads to bad flavors, wasted oil, and too much of the compound’s effects. Less is more, at least when you’re starting out.

Along with the CBD serving size, consider starting with smaller batches. If the dish turns out good, then you can prepare the recipe again with a larger batch. This will also help you get more comfortable with different CBD serving sizes, allowing you to make alterations with future recipes so that you can get the most out of your CBD edibles.

Store your CBD oil properly

When you’re not using your CBD oil, make sure you keep it in a cool, dark place. Cannabinoids are naturally sensitive to heat and light, leading to overall degradation in potency and quality. Degraded CBD oil will not be as effective and may impart more bitter, unpleasant flavors into your recipes.

Stick with more refined CBD oils

Filtered, decarboxylated, and other more refined forms of CBD oils tend to work well with all cooking applications. Less refined oils may leave an unpleasant aftertaste, especially if you are working with more herb-heavy recipes.

Less refined CBD oil pairs better with strong flavors

All that said, less-refined or lower quality oils can still be useful in recipes featuring strong flavors, like chocolate or spices. Unfiltered CBD oils also tend to contain more vitamins and helpful amino acids than their filtered counterparts.

Thorough mixing is vital to CBD cooking, because it ensures the cannabidiol is evenly distributed. Stir, stir, stir!

Stir as much as possible

From guacamole to chocolate chip cookies to soups, make sure you stir in the CBD oil as much as possible, more than you might even think. This ensures that CBD is evenly distributed throughout the batch so that every bite offers equal potency.

Cooking with CBD is better than drizzling CBD

It’s always recommended that you mix the oil into your ingredients for optimal flavors, but if you are in a rush, you can drizzle the oil directly onto your food. It won’t taste as good, but you can still get the desired effects.

Above all, have fun! As you get more familiar with using CBD oil in your cooking, you can adjust recipes and create custom dishes of your own that taste great and offer the benefits of CBD.

Hemp Beer Goes Nationwide: New Belgium Launches The Hemperor (VIDEO)

Last month, we got to attend a special tasting of a unique new hemp beer, and talk to part of the team behind its creation. “We finally brought together hemp and hops,” said Steve Navas, brand activation manager for New Belgium, when describing The Hemperor.

Last month, we got to try a unique new hemp beer and talk to part of the team behind it.

“We finally brought together hemp and hops,” said Steve Navas, brand activation manager for New Belgium Brewing.

The private bar in downtown Austin where the tasting took place was filled with the incredible smell of The Hemperor hemp pale ale. As we spoke with Navas, the sounds of local bluegrass band Steel Betty tickled our ears.

Over the past few months, New Belgium has traveled the USA sharing their new hemp beer, The Hemperor.

“We’re one of the first breweries to be able to nationally roll out a beer like this,” Navas told us. “This is two years in the making.”

As for The Hemperor? We thought it was delicious. Here’s how we described this hemp beer in our official Hemperor review:

Wow! Powerful green hemp aroma from this pale ale. The hemp adds a nutty, smooth flavor that balances out the hops, especially in comparison to most IPAs. This beer is sweet with a very mild bitter aftertaste.

You can also feel good about your purchase, because one dollar from every bottle sold goes to support hemp legalization. Keep an eye out for The Hemperor at a store near you.

Hemp Pesto Aioli & Hemp Tacos: Cooking With Hemp Way Foods

Sampling Carla Boyd’s cooking was one of the highlights of our recent visit to Denver. Boyd is the founder of Hemp Way Foods, a Colorado company. She shared two of her favorite recipes with us: hemp pesto aioli and hemp tacos.

Sampling Carla Boyd’s cooking, including her hemp pesto aioli, was one of the highlights of our recent visit to Denver.

Boyd is the founder of Hemp Way Foods, a Colorado company. People lined up to sample her hemp burgers, vegan hemp nachos, and hemp tacos at the NoCo Hemp Expo last month. After we tried her food, we knew we wanted to find out more and get a few recipes for our readers.

Hemp hearts are a key ingredient in Carla Boyd’s hemp pesto aioli, along with many other delicious recipes.

We spoke with Boyd by phone to learn how she discovered hemp. She also shared two of her recipes, which you’ll find below: her famous hemp pesto aioli and hemp tacos.

HEMP WAY FOODS CREATED AFTER HEMP HEALED ILLNESS

Boyd began investigating hemp as a food source because of severe digestive problems. Her quality of life suffered, and nothing else seemed to help.

“I was a walking skeleton at the time,” she described. “I wasn’t absorbing any nutrients.”

Boyd was already involved with hemp advocacy, “but I had never really focused on the food side.”

Further research into hemp’s nutritional benefits led to the creation of her first product, a hemp burger.

“People started asking for it and wanted to buy it,” she recalled. “I never planned to have a food company; it’s almost like the company chose me.”

Hemp seeds are rich in antioxidants and natural anti-inflammatory substances. Hemp protein is also one of the most easily available and digestible proteins in the plant world. Boyd believes all of this contributed to making hemp easier for her body to process and use.

As Boyd’s health improved, the company grew with her. Four years later, Hemp Way Foods offers both the burger and hemp crumbles, which come in both original and sriracha pepper flavors. Both the hemp burger and hemp crumbles are vegan and free from common allergens like gluten, corn and soy. Hemp Way products are found in about a dozen restaurants and retail locations in Colorado, with plans to go national in the works.

Along the way, Boyd received the enthusiastic support of other hemp industry advocates and entrepreneurs.

“In the hemp world, there’s definitely a camaraderie,” she said.

The Hemperor Beer Review: New Belgium Adds Hemp Flavor & Aroma To Hops

The Hemperor is a unique new offering from New Belgium. While this “HPA” or Hemp Pale Ale has the strong flavor of hops, the hemp flavor balances out the bitterness. And the hempy smell of The Hemperor has to be experienced to be believed.

Our Hemperor beer review in a nut (hemp?) shell: Delicious!

New Belgium Brewing recently invited our Editor in Chief to a special Austin, Texas tasting of their new hemp beer, The Hemperor HPA.

The Hemperor is a unique new offering. This is the first hemp beer from a brewery as ubiquitous as New Belgium. While this “HPA” or Hemp Pale Ale has the strong flavor of hops, the hemp flavor balances out the bitterness. The smell of The Hemperor has to be experienced to be believed. The private downtown bar where the tasting took place smelled like a hemp field at harvest, just from the open bottles and glasses of beer.

New Belgium are also believers in hemp legalization. One dollar from every bottle sold goes to groups like Hemp 4 Victory.

“It’s a crop that has a lot of stigma in this country and I think this beer could be a catalyst for change,” declared Steve Navas, brand activation manager at New Belgium.

New Belgium is also encouraging beer fans to contact their elected representatives and demand total hemp legalization.

HEMP AND HOPS COME TOGETHER IN THE HEMPEROR

Hemp and hops have a long history of human cultivation but they’ve rarely been combined in a modern beer. Since New Belgium is from Colorado, the heart of modern hemp growing in the U.S. it might be inevitable that they’d decide to mix the two.

“Our brewers met some farmers, got to brewing, and figured out it tastes great in a beer,” Navas said.

Regulations are one issue that may have kept hemp beers from reaching a national market before. As the creators of hemp wine discovered, the government bodies which oversee alcohol licensing and distribution in the U.S. are resistant to ingredients like hemp. Now for sale in 49 states, The Hemperor is still unavailable in Kansas, which has extremely strict laws on hemp products.

New Belgium is lobbying to change those regulations. “Hopefully in the next few months we’ll be able to sell this in that state as well,” Navas said.

Other than that small amount of resistance, he said people greet The Hemperor with excitement.

“People are overall ecstatic about it,” Navas said.

“The beer speaks for itself and it smells for itself,” he added, taking a whiff of the beer’s distinctive aroma in his glass.
