Hemp protein powder is not only a protein powerhouse, but it’s also inherently loaded with more healthy omega fatty acids and fiber than many other common protein powders – Dr. Axe
Athletes all over the world are using hemp protein to boost their muscle recovery and growth. As a 100% natural protein source, hemp is gaining more attention as the market is getting flooded with gimmicky supplements. To learn more about the lifestyle and health benefits that hemp protein offers, we met with Daniel Potter who is the co-founder of Lean Hemp.
Tell us a bit about Lean Hemp.
Daniel Potter: LeanHemp is a premium protein brand that offers three delicious hemp protein flavors. It is vegan, USDA organic, 100% plant-based and extremely nutritious.
Why hemp protein? What makes hemp protein better than other protein options?
DP: Hemp protein is the most complete protein on earth. It contains all your BCAA’s (Branch Chain Amino Acids), EFA’s (Essential Fatty Acids), Omega-3’s, and Omega-6’s. It is also slow digesting, high in fiber and makes for an excellent meal replacement.
Some consider hemp to be a “superfood”. Additionally, LeanHemp protein does have several flavors that contain the superfood maca, a plant root from Peru.
Is hemp protein meant for everyone? A typical serving of hemp protein seems to offer less protein than other conventional protein supplements. Is this a disadvantage for hardcore athletes?
DP: Hemp protein can certainly be used by anyone and everyone. It makes for a great meal replacement, pre or post workout protein shake, and mixes well into smoothies, baked goods and many other foods.
Your body can only digest and absorb about 30 grams of protein in one sitting (if you work out), so anyone who is trying to “bulk-up” using whey or other protein supplements are only tricking themselves as their body isn’t absorbing this protein, but rather turning it into fat.
I had no idea, but that’s great to know. So I noticed on your social media pages that Lean Hemp sponsors quite a few athletes. How have athletes taken to adopting hemp into their diet?
How long have you been taking hemp protein?
DP: I’ve been taking hemp protein for about two years now. If I’m going to support and believe in a product it’s only fitting to use and live that product.
Personally, what differences have you noticed by using hemp protein?
DP: I have noticed that I am able to take hemp protein before a workout and feel no ill signs. Previously, whenever I used a whey or even other plant-based proteins prior to a workout, I would often feel sick or get very bloated during and after the workout.

How do you prepare your hemp protein shake? Do anything unique? Or does hemp protein taste great with just water?
DP: If I’m going to make a hemp protein shake, I add about 8 to 10 oz of almond milk and half a banana. We have proteins that are peanut butter or chocolate flavored, so they already have a great taste.
Typically though, for time sensitivity, I will just add about 10 oz of almond milk, 2 oz of water and 20 grams of LH protein.
Thanks for the tip! What are some other ways you eat healthy?
DP: I limit the amount of meat I eat and also what types of meats I eat, which are typically chicken or fish. The majority of my diet consists of whole fruits, vegetables and legumes, mainly sweet potato or chickpeas.
It’s so easy for people to get tempted to make unhealthy choices. What are some tips you have for people to avoid those temptations?
DP: I have family members who are overweight and I’ve seen how weight can lead to many other health problems, such as hypertension, thyroid issues, high (or low) blood sugar and many other things.
I’m able to avoid these temptations for two reasons:
- I want to live a long time and it’s been proven that when you eat healthy (whole fruits, vegetables, legumes, and minimally processed foods) your chances of living longer and being healthier dramatically increase.
- I do give myself a cheat meal once a week, where I will eat whatever I want. Primarily my cheat day consists of donuts, fast-food and maybe some dairy.
What also helps me avoid my temptations are my work outs. I get a rush of endorphins during and after my workout. I also enjoy the pain that it brings because it allows my mind to be free and gives me a sense of accomplishment upon finishing. For me working out is very meditative and what has helped the most.
What other daily habits do you have to optimize your lifestyle?
DP: I set aside at least 1.5 hours every day for exercise; 10 minutes of meditation at least once per day; chest breathing when I feel overwhelmed or before bed.
Thanks for sharing! Anything else you want to share with a person who might be interested in using or switching to hemp protein?
DP: Our mission and message is simple; we believe in clean, natural, sustainable, healthy products that will help this earth and the people on it. This is why we created LeanHemp — “A Better Protein”. Hemp protein guarantees high quality as it contains all BCAA’s (all 20 amino acids, including the 9 essential), EFA’s (Omega’s 3 & 6), and is easily digestible. It’s also 100% plant-based, vegan, organic and contain no more than four ingredients!
