A defiant act by an MMA fighter transformed global policy on athletes using CBD oil.

When MMA fighter Nate Diaz took a few drags from a CBD-laden vape pen during a press conference, he put his career at risk. Instead of hurting him, the act influenced an important change to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)’s policies, and helped reduce the stigma around hemp.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is an extract of cannabis or industrial hemp which doesn’t cause people to get high. Instead, its beneficial properties includes reducing inflammation. Now, many more professional and top-ranking amateur athletes will be able to use CBD, because recently WADA removed cannabidiol from its list of banned substances.

In this article, we’ll look at why athletes use CBD, and why this change matters for everyone, not just those who compete at sports.

AFTER NATE DIAZ VAPES CBD AT PRESS CONFERENCE, WADA CHANGES GLOBAL ANTI-DOPING RULES

Diaz surprised reporters when he used a vape pen during a press conference after his August 20, 2016 loss against Conor McGregor, who at the time was the featherweight champion mixed-martial arts fighter. Visibly bruised from the fight, Diaz explained that his vape contained CBD oil, and went on to tout CBD’s benefits to the assembled media:

“It helps with the healing process and inflammation and things like that, so you want to get these for before or after the fights, in training. It’ll make your life a better place.”

However, CBD was on WADA’s list of banned substances and also banned by its national equivalent, the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). UFC fighters are tested for prohibited substances after the fight and, according to the rules at the time, were prohibited from using banned substances during a window that begins 6 hours before the pre-fight weigh-in and ends six hours after the bout.

Even though Diaz had already been tested (and that test eventually came back clean of all prohibited substances including CBD), the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) would have been in their rights to suspend or punish him for the public infraction.

‘I’VE BEEN A GAME CHANGER’: NATE DIAZ TAKES CREDIT FOR CHANGING CBD IN SPORTS POLICY

Instead, the USADA decided to issue an official warning against Diaz’s conduct. In April, the UFC changed their rules, shortening the prohibited substance use window.

“The in-competition window now closes after the completion of the post-fight drug test sample collection,” reported Marc Raimondi at the site MMA Fighting on May 6.

In September, WADA announced that “cannabidiol is no longer prohibited.” WADA was founded by and is still largely sponsored by the International Olympic Committee, and so regional agencies like USADA quickly follow its lead when it comes to changes in policy. According to the site MMA Junkie, CBD will be removed from USADA’s list of banned substances in 2018. Psychoactive cannabis remains prohibited by both WADA and USADA.

“Yeah, they changed it compliments of your boy here,” Diaz told MMA Fighting in May, taking credit for the policy shift already in progress.

“I’ve been a game changer,” he added. “We just ain’t get no credit for it.”

Diaz, who along with his brother, fellow MMA fighter Nick Diaz, is an outspoken advocate for cannabis legalization, also told MMA Fighting that though he’d benefitted from industry sponsorships he’d made the decision to try CBD “organically.”

WHY ATHLETES USE CBD OIL AND HEMP FOR BETTER HEALTH & WELLNESS

atheletes use cbd

It’s easy to see why someone like Diaz would seek out CBD. Though professional athletes are often well paid and showered in fame, pro sports are notoriously hard on the human body and MMA fights, in particular, leave competitors battered and aching.

Science has shown that CBD can reduce inflammation and ease chronic pain, all while causing few side effects. While we don’t know how many athletes use CBD, studies have shown that vaping CBD is a very popular way to take this supplement, alongside other methods like CBD tinctures and gummies.

CBD isn’t the only form of hemp which can benefit athletes, either. Hemp is a high-protein food that’s rich in nutrients, high in fiber, and might even help fight bad cholesterol. Best of all, it tastes delicious, with a rich, nutty flavor. Hemp seeds go great in smoothies or on salads and yogurt, and hemp protein powder is also widely available.

WHY IT MATTERS TO EVERYONE THAT NATE DIAZ AND OTHER ATHLETES CAN USE CBD OIL

In an October 1 discussion on MMA Junkie, retired fighter Danny Downes downplayed the importance of the policy change, while sports columnist Ben Fowlkes called it a small but important shift toward more sensible treatment of fighters who use substances like CBD and cannabis.

“It’s pretty minor, sure, but it’s an encouraging sign,” Fowlkes said.

cbd for mma

While it may be a minor change for MMA fighters, we think it could have much bigger repercussions for all of us. Athletes are looked up to as the pinnacle of human prowess, and we often model our behavior on theirs. The athletic community can set a precedent for the wider world and, as we’ve recently seen, professional athletes can also be important advocates for social change.

At Ministry of Hemp, we see this as a positive step forward toward the deregulation of cannabis and the removal of all legal barriers around hemp growing and use. The timing couldn’t be better either: while the DEA has made absurd threats against CBD vendors, Congress is considering fully legalizing hemp through the Industrial Hemp Farming Act. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is also preparing to advise the World Health Organization about its policy on CBD.

So thank you, Nate Diaz, for helping remove a bit of the stigma around hemp and cannabis, and making the world a little safer for CBD users everywhere.

Arthritis is the number one cause of disability in the United States.

With almost half of adults 65 years and older experiencing some form of this painful disorder, it’s a condition many of us will experience if we live long enough. In all, the Arthritis Foundation, which compiled these facts on arthritis sufferers in the U.S., estimates that 50 million adults, and even 1 in 250 children, suffer from arthritis.

At Ministry of Hemp, we’re always curious if hemp, and especially CBD oil, can improve people’s quality of life. Previously, we’ve looked at how hemp can help the elderly live less stressful lives. We’ve also looked at whether cannabidiol (CBD) can help other medical conditions like chronic pain and epilepsy. Since arthritis is so common, we thought it deserved a closer look.

cbd for arthritis

CBD is a cannabinoid, meaning it’s a chemical relative of THC, the main active ingredient in psychoactive cannabis (also known as “marijuana”), but it doesn’t make people high. Instead, thousands of CBD users report that it eases inflammation and can even improve their mental state, such as anxiety. When we investigated CBD and arthritis, we discovered that hundreds of people are already using it to reduce their pain.

While CBD seems to help many people, it’s not a miracle cure, and it appears most people find CBD helpful in conjunction with a broad arthritis treatment plan, which can include exercise, changes to diet and prescription or over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs. Of course, this treatment plan should be guided by a medical professional.

As always in these articles, we’ll look at what science and medical professionals are saying about using CBD for arthritis, along with some reports from everyday CBD consumers.

‘Potent Anti-arthritic Effect’: Science Shows Cbd Could Slow Progression Of Arthritis

Unfortunately, while the safety of CBD is overall well established, when it comes to its effectiveness in treating various conditions there have been far too few studies on humans, and we frequently have to rely on animal studies. CBD and arthritis are no exception.

In one especially promising study, published in the June 2000 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, scientists artificially induced arthritic symptoms in mice, then treated them with CBD. Both oral and injected methods of administering CBD orally were equally effective, and CBD seemed to slow the progression of damage to the joints.

hemp cbd oil helps arthritis

“Taken together, these data show that CBD, through its combined immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory actions, has a potent anti-arthritic effect,” the researchers concluded.

One preliminary study, published January 2006 by the journal Rheumatology, treated humans with arthritis using Sativex, an oral pharmaceutical created from cannabis extracts that includes both THC and CBD. In a fascinating aside, the authors note that cannabis was first proposed as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis in 2800 B.C., but has often been dismissed by modern medicine despite anecdotal evidence of its usefulness. As for Sativex, the scientists were cautiously optimistic about its effectiveness with arthritis, though they stressed that “larger, more prolonged studies … are indicated.”

Of course, Sativex is not widely available in the United States, and psychoactive cannabis remains illegal at the federal level, and inaccessible to many people in many parts of the country.

Study Shows Hundreds Using Cbd To Ease Arthritis Symptoms

Fortunately, hundreds of people with arthritis report a healing effect from using CBD alone, and CBD is available to almost anyone.

Over a quarter of those surveyed reported using CBD in some form to treat their arthritis, making it one of the top conditions found in the study.”

In August this year, cannabis-research firm Brightfield Group surveyed 2,400 users of HelloMD, a medical cannabis information site. This dramatic study, which we’ve looked at before, found widespread satisfaction with CBD among regular consumers, and even revealed that 42 percent of those surveyed had given up pharmaceutical drugs in favor of CBD.

Over a quarter of those surveyed reported using CBD in some form to treat their arthritis, making it one of the top conditions found in the study. However, only 11 percent of those people reported that CBD was “extremely effective” in treating their arthritis, suggesting that most find it best to combine CBD with more conventional arthritis treatments.

These results were generally echoed by the anecdotal evidence we found among arthritis sufferers who discussed CBD on reddit, both on the “thritis” subreddit devoted to the disorder and the general CBD subreddit: some users found CBD was helpful, while others had mixed results. Some redditors reported preferring high-CBD strains of psychoactive cannabis that can be purchased in states with legal recreational or medicinal cannabis, while many reported positive effects from CBD alone. Some redditors said they prefer vaping CBD during flare ups, as well.

One redditor named Heph333 said CBD combined with dietary changes had transformed their life. “Before, I was walking with a cane and two knee braces. Now I’m able to be physically active again.”

Heph333 concluded: “With the way I feel now compared to how I used to feel, I don’t dare go back. That includes making sure I never run out of CBD.”

Topical Versus Oral Use Of Cbd For Arthritis: Does It Matter?

Many people take CBD orally as a tincture, in capsules, or even as a CBD gummies. On the other hand, topical CBD is especially popular for treating inflammation, and joint pains caused by conditions like arthritis, as we’ve noted before here at Ministry of Hemp.

Researchers used a topical form in one 2016 study of artificially-induced arthritis in rats, published in the European Journal of Pain. Not only did CBD ease rats’ symptoms, but applying it to the skin also meant there were more consistent levels of CBD in the blood compared with oral administration, because none was metabolized by the liver.

Medical Marijuana, Inc. reported in April 2016 that, because topical CBD can bind directly to endocannabinoid receptors in the skin, it skips the bloodstream and therefore causes even fewer side effects than normal.

As always, we recommend that arthritis sufferers experiment with all the forms of CBD to find out what helps most.

Beyond CBD & Arthritis: More Research Needed To Unlock CBD’s Full Potential

use cbd for arthritis

From arthritis to schizophrenia, the more we learn about CBD the more we are in awe of its almost miraculous benefits. Yet even though scientists have studied this substance for decades (or even centuries!), the same sentiment repeats itself over and over again: more research is needed.

The stigma surrounding cannabis is fading over time, with laws changing nationwide and conservative lawmakers increasingly supportive of industrial hemp and even medical marijuana.

We hope a similar change is happening as more medical professionals embrace hemp’s vast potential. With so many of doctors’ patients already making use of CBD, it seems like it’s only matter of time until researchers give it the attention it deserves.

What The Indiana CBD Raids Reveal About Hemp & CBD In America

Indiana State Excise Police recently confiscated thousands of products containing CBD oil from around the state, only to back down when they realized they’d overstepped their legal boundaries.

In a series of raids that took place over five weeks in May and June 2017, state police took CBD supplements from 57 stores across the state, according to a Sept. 13 investigation by The Indianapolis Star. The attack on CBD appears to be an unintended consequence of a law that was meant to improve access to CBD for people with epilepsy. Now, the state has been forced to admit that CBD is legal in Indiana.

Indiana CBD Raids

While science has shown that CBD is extremely effective for many with epilepsy, thousands of consumers seek out this non-psychoactive extract of industrial hemp to help with numerous ailments. Studies suggest that CBD can benefit conditions ranging from insomnia to schizophrenia, and some people are giving up other drugs in favor of CBD.

Unfortunately, this healing extract still remains in a legal gray area according to some government agencies and, as a result, some vendors have come under pressure. The CBD raids in Indiana are further evidence that federal action is needed to resolve CBD’s legal status, once and for all. In this article, we’ll dig deeper into what happened in Indiana, and look at what the future might bring for the state and the nation.

‘IT REALLY WORKED, THEN IT WAS JUST GONE’: ONGOING STATE & FEDERAL CONFUSION OVER CBD’S LEGALITY

“It’s ridiculous. So many people were benefiting from it,” an anonymous worker at a Fresh Thyme grocery store told Bob Segall, senior investigative reporter at WTHR after excise police seized thousands of dollars in CBD products from the chain’s stores on June 14.

Thyme Farmers Market got raided for CBD

The raids ended later that month, after the confiscations triggered “triggered outrage and confusion” among state residents, and Segall reported that CBD was back for sale at Fresh Thyme a month later.

To understand what happened, we have to examine the legal status of hemp and CBD in the United States. After decades of total prohibition on all forms of cannabis, the 2014 Farm Bill legalized industrial hemp for research purposes, including market research (sales of hemp and CBD products). Each state was allowed to determine how to implement this hemp research and, to date, 33 states have implemented some form of hemp growing program.

Despite hemp advocates and many legal experts arguing that CBD and hemp are unambiguously legal under these research programs, the Drug Enforcement Agency continues to threaten the CBD vendors and producers. Law enforcement agencies in some states, seemingly inspired by the DEA, have occasionally also threatened CBD vendors.

While CBD consumers haven’t faced any legal threats, their ability to buy products they depend on for relief can be interrupted.

“It really worked, and then it was just gone,” said Angela Hopkins, an Indiana resident who told Segall she’d been using CBD to treat a broken ankle and wean herself off prescription painkillers. “They told us they were raided and couldn’t sell it anymore.”

‘OUR LEGISLATION MESSED IT UP FOR EVERYBODY’: ADVOCATES AND LAWMAKERS ANGERED BY ‘OUT OF CONTROL’ POLICE

In the case of the recent raids in Indiana, state police claimed House Enrolled Act 1148, a law intended to help epilepsy patients access CBD without legal repercussions, allowed them to raid CBD vendors who were selling CBD to customers for any reason other than epilepsy. While some states like Texas have created programs to distribute CBD to people with epilepsy, these provisions were absent from the Indianapolis law because lawmakers were fearful of seeming “pro-cannabis,” according to The Indianapolis Star.

Rather than clear up legal confusion over CBD, the act seems to have simply highlighted the problem. Jeff Shelton, an owner at Happy Daze, told the Star’s reporters Kaitlin L Lange and Tony Cook that police seemed clueless as they carried out the raids:

“It didn’t seem like they really knew what they were looking for. They weren’t very knowledgeable about CBD at all. They didn’t know what the current laws were.”

When Shelton and other staff objected to the raids, police cited them for “hindering law enforcement.” Cops then expanded their search to include a Daze store owners’ house, ultimately leading to drug possession charges when they discovered a baggy of psychoactive cannabis (which remains illegal under Indiana law).

Brandy Barrett, the mother of a 10-year old boy with severe epilepsy and an advocate for the CBD legislation, told the paper she felt “awful” about the raids. “I even heard from a few people that our legislation had messed it up for everybody, and that obviously wasn’t our intent.”

Lange and Cook reported some lawmakers were also questioning the raids. “It sounds like we’ve got an agency that is out of control,” Rep. Jim Lucas, R- Seymour told them.

Even though the raids have stopped, no one has gotten their confiscated products back. The Star reported that, in all, over 3,500 items were seized from 57 stores. Additionally, the state’s attorney general is reportedly evaluating CBD’s legality, meaning the raids could return at any time.

US LAWS MUST CHANGE SO EVERYONE CAN SAFELY ACCESS CBD & HEMP

It’s perhaps ironic that CBD oil can be a great stress reliever, given that so many consumers in Indiana faced considerable stress over their ability to purchase CBD oil over the summer. While CBD is available from online vendors, people should be able to purchase it from their local shops just like any other nutritional supplement.

Despite some threats against legal cannabis in all its forms from the DEA and the Department of Justice, it appears opinions about this plant are changing as the stigma toward it fades nationwide. Hemp in particular has bipartisan political support, especially in American “tobacco country”. With bills like the Industrial Hemp Farming Act, which would reduce the DEA’s control over hemp, under consideration by Congress, advocates say it’s only a matter of time before industrial hemp, at least, is legalized.

All of us at Ministry of Hemp have personally benefitted from hemp and CBD oil and, like so many thousands of others, we look forward to a day when this “billion dollar crop” is freely available in all its forms.

cbd gummies
Many of us loved eating gummy bears as kids, but did you know there are now gummies with healing benefits?

Alongside the thousands of people enjoying the benefits of CBD oil as a tincture, CBD gummies are quickly increasing in popularity. These delicious candies offer the same benefits as other forms of CBD, but many people enjoy taking them in this form for a variety of reasons, including their great flavor.

CBD is short for cannabidiol, also known as CBD, one of many naturally occurring chemicals found in cannabis. Unlike THC, which is CBD’s better known cousin and the main active ingredient in psychoactive cannabis, CBD doesn’t get you “high.” Instead, CBD users report it benefits a host of ailments, from chronic pain to schizophrenia. It’s even been shown to benefit kids with epilepsy.

People seek out CBD because it has few side effects compared to its numerous potential benefits. And, fortunately, CBD is widely available to consumers in all 50 states. In this article, we look at why CBD gummies are becoming a preferred nutritional supplement for so many.

What are CBD Gummies?

CBD gummies are starting to become very popular as a daily supplement. They are gaining a lot of popularity among families that want to enjoy the full benefits of cannabidiol in a form that’s easy to swallow. When CBD is in gummy form, it makes it much easier and much more enjoyable for kids and pets to consume. Adults enjoy taking them as a daily treat too.

Just like regular gummies, CBD gummies are available in fun shapes like little rainbow teddy bears, and both sweet and sour flavors. It’s a great way for grown ups to feel nostalgic about their childhood sweet tooth while getting proven benefits.

ORGANIC & DELICIOUS: GUMMIES ARE A FUN WAY TO ENJOY CBD

cbd edibles

It is important to always read the label to know exactly what you are buying and consuming but you can rest assured that CBD gummies from reputable vendors are organic (unless stated otherwise). These gummies are made of natural ingredients and are then infused with organic CBD. As the result, you get an amazing tasting and HEALTHY CBD Gummy. There are no harmful chemicals or stimulants either.

SCIENCE ON CBD FOR PAIN, INSOMNIA, INFLAMMATION AND ANXIETY

A growing body of evidence on cannabidiol has shown through multiple studies and medical tests that it aids in alleviating pain of many kinds. Some CBD users have stopped taking over the counter drugs or pharmaceuticals because CBD helps them so much. Studies of cannabidiol also show it could help suffers of insomnia, inflammation, and anxiety.  Check out the conclusions and studies linked below.

  • Chronic Pain: Specifically, cannabis extracts (THC & CBD) have shown effectiveness to relief some symptoms of the patients with multiple sclerosis, mainly for pain and spasticity.”
  • Insomnia and sleep disorders: “The systemic acute administration of CBD appears to increase total sleep time, in addition to increasing sleep latency in the light period of the day of administration.”
  • Inflammation: “Specifically, cannabis extracts (THC & CBD) have shown effectiveness to relief some symptoms of the patients with multiple sclerosis, mainly for pain and spasticity.”
  • Anxiety: “Studies using animal models of anxiety and involving healthy volunteers clearly suggest an anxiolytic-like effect of CBD. Moreover, CBD was shown to reduce anxiety in patients with social anxiety disorder.”

CBD GUMMIES VS THC GUMMIES

In states where psychoactive cannabis (marijuana) is legal for recreational or medicinal purposes, THC gummies are also available. What differentiates these two products is whether they contain Cannabidiol (CBD) or Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

However, while THC is psychoactive (it gets you “high”), CBD is not. While many people prefer CBD because they find it doesn’t interfere as much with their daily lives, nonetheless THC has many benefits, especially as a pain killer. Nonetheless, both options provide many potential healing benefits and we hope all forms of cannabis will someday be available legally throughout the United States. In the meantime, be sure to obey your local laws.

CBD GUMMIES: WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE?

While you can effectively take CBD as a tincture, swallow it in a capsule, or even vape it, CBD is appearing in many new forms, from chocolate to cocktails. We expect that even more creative products will appear in the future.

It’s no surprise, then, that gummies are still best sellers. Whether you are suffering from pain, stress, inflammation, anxiety, depression, or poor sleep … CBD gummies provide a fun and effective way to consume this beneficial cannabinoid.

cbd vs pharmaceuticals

A new study shows that many consumers are giving up conventional pharmaceutical drugs in favor of CBD.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of dozens of cannabinoids found in hemp, but unlike THC it doesn’t cause people to get “high.”

In a study released in early August, market-research firm Brightfield Group surveyed 2,400 registered users of Hello MD, a medical cannabis education and advocacy website. One of the study’s most dramatic findings is that 42 percent of people who use CBD report that they’ve given up pharmaceutical drugs in favor of cannabis in some form. This figure includes both strains of psychoactive cannabis, a.k.a. “marijuana,” with high levels of CBD and CBD-only products like CBD oil supplements made from industrial hemp.

top medical conditions treaded by cbd

HelloMD and BrightfieldGroup Study Report 2017

Whether or not it replaced pharmaceuticals, most of the respondents reported that CBD helps a great deal and that they use it regularly. 80 percent said they consume CBD in some form at least once a week, with 41 percent using it daily. The vast majority, about 82 percent, reported that CBD offered significant relief from their ailments, which ranged from anxiety to chronic pain. Although the research has some limitations, it’s compelling evidence that CBD can have healing benefits.

While the idea that people are giving up pharmaceuticals for CBD is making headlines — even in places like Forbes magazine — we wanted to dig deeper into this fascinating study, which reveals a lot of interesting details about how and why people are using CBD in all its forms.

CBD AND PHARMACEUTICALS: 52 PERCENT REPORT CBD MORE EFFECTIVE THAN PHARMA DRUGS

HelloMD and Brightfield reported that 52 percent of people who responded to their research agreed that CBD is “more effective,” or “much more effective” than pharmaceutical drugs. People use CBD for diverse reasons, according to the study.

cbd vs traditional medication efficacy

HelloMD and BrightfieldGroup Study Report 2017

“There are a vast range of medical conditions that CBD consumers reported using cannabis to relieve, the principal among which were anxiety, insomnia, joint pain/inflammation and depression,” the authors reported.

An increasingly impressive body of scientific research backs up these CBD users’ first-hand experiences. Scientists have found evidence supporting the use of CBD to treat anxiety, insomnia, many forms of chronic pain and even schizophrenia, as we’ve detailed in previous articles at Ministry of Hemp.

EFFECTIVE BUT NOT A MIRACLE CURE: 57 PERCENT STILL USE CBD AND PHARMACEUTICALS TOGETHER

However, neither CBD nor any form of cannabis are miracle cures and it’s important to note that most people, or 57 percent, reported that they continue to use both CBD and pharmaceutical drugs together. People were also slightly more likely to report that CBD is more effective than over-the-counter drugs than to prescription pharmaceuticals, though users of both reported satisfaction with CBD.  It’s clear to us that while CBD can be a very useful tool for many people, it often can’t completely replace traditional Western medicine and prescription drugs.

Though this study shouldn’t be dismissed, it also differs somewhat from the kind of research that gets published in scientific journals. HelloMD users are presumably already predisposed toward interest in cannabis in all its forms, while those who found it ineffective are less likely to respond to a survey. There was also no placebo group as one would find in conventional “double blind” medical research.

“More research will be required to determine whether there is a causal link between CBD products and relief of the various health conditions discussed,” the authors caution.

VAPING TO GUMMIES, SURVEY REVEALS THE MANY WAYS PEOPLE TAKE CBD SUPPLEMENTS

Ways to take CBD

In addition to comparing pharmaceuticals and CBD, the HelloMD and Brightfield study reveals a great deal about how people use CBD. Over 50 percent of people who responded to the survey said they prefer to vape CBD products, but tinctures, topical ointments and even gummies were also popular.

It’s important to note that a majority of the people who responded say they prefer to use CBD alongside THC, which can be a powerful painkiller. Many of those surveyed regularly use strains of psychoactive cannabis which are high in CBD, or they combine CBD-only products with other forms of medical cannabis. Users of both CBD and THC may be taking advantage of the “entourage effect,” where different cannabinoid chemicals work together to strengthen each other.

“Consumers may, for example, alternate between CBD-only products and THC-dominant products because the ‘entourage effect’ gives them more complete healing, but by differentiating the two it allows them to remain clear-headed during the workday and consume THC when they are relaxing in the evening,” the authors noted.

Of course, since just 29 states plus the District of Colombia have legalized medical or recreational cannabis in some form, and with the federal government still threatening to crack down on states that have legalized it, this option remains out of reach for many Americans.

Among those who only use CBD, 58 percent are women. This lines up with Ministry of Hemp’s informal research which shows that many women seek out CBD supplements to improve their lives or the lives of their loved ones.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT FOR CBD AND CANNABIS AS LAWS CHANGE & PEOPLE LEARN

According to Brightfield Group’s predictions, the future seems bright for CBD supplements and other CBD-based products:

“Per this survey’s responses, users have found CBD to be quite effective in relieving various medical conditions – even more so, in some cases, than their over-the-counter and prescription medications. … Over time, as the CBD compound becomes better-understood (especially with regard to its efficacy against medical ailments), and cannabis prohibition continues to wane across the states, CBD products are well-positioned to become an important player in the industry.”

Looking beyond the potential profits for growers and vendors, more importantly this study shows the immense healing potential of CBD. We hope that, in the near future, the medical industry comes to fully embrace CBD for their patients, and that the government continues to remove barriers that prevent people from using hemp and cannabis in all its forms in the ways that benefit them most.

Did you know that people used hemp oil in medicine and in their households in 6000 BCE?

Hemp has been around for a millennia actually, since there is evidence that it was being cultivated around that time. In China, both the oil and the seeds were used in food. Not only was the plant used for food, but the ancient Chinese used the stalks for building materials. They also made clothing and shoes from hemp cord. Beginning around 100 BCE, there is evidence of hemp being used to produce paper.

hemp history china

By the 1500 CE era, hemp was a familiar plant in Europe. In fact, King Henry VIII would fine his subjects if they did not grow hemp. Prior to the development of cotton, hemp was a primary source material for clothing.

By the year 1616, settlers brought the crop to Jamestown. In 1619, the Virginia Assembly established that all citizens were required to grow hemp. By the mid-1800s, hemp extract was listed in the third edition of the United States pharmacopeia.

Hemp seed oil is extracted from a different variety of cannabis than the type people ingest to get “high.” It contains no THC – the main psychoactive ingredient in “marijuana.” However, the medical benefits have been recognized for centuries and more are discovered every day.

Below, you’ll find a few of our  favorite benefits of hemp seed oil.

hemp seed oil benefits

HEMP REDUCES INFLAMMATION & FIGHTS CANCER TREATMENT SIDE EFFECTS

High in fatty acids GLA and omega-3, hemp seed oil helps to reduce inflammation. It also helps to promote a boosted immune system. A 2007 study revealed that in addition to preventing heart disease, hemp seed oil helps in relieving cancer treatment side effects.

Cannabinoids like cannabidiol (CBD), contained in the oil, are partly responsible for the hemp’s healing benefits. When it comes to ingesting CBD extract, it could be included in edibles, smoked or used in vaporizers. Research has shown that vaporization allows patients to get the most cannabinoids in a less amount of time compared to other methods of intake.

HEMP COULD HELP BALANCE HORMONES & EASE PMS

Gamma-linoleic acid (GLA) is an important building block in prostaglandins, which are hormone-like compounds that help the body function optimally. Hemp seed contains GLA and this may be a reason that some people who take hemp supplements  report relief of PMS and/or the symptoms of menopause. menopausal symptoms relieved.

HEMP OIL IS FULL OF IMMUNE-BOOSTING ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS

Hemp seed is nutritious – mainly because of the high level of essential fatty acids that it contains. These fatty acids are essential to building a strong and healthy immune system. Even further, our bodies produce the same endocannabinoids found in THC naturally, but they are derived from the same fatty acids provided by hemp oil.  Supplementing with hemp oil is a good way to boost your fatty acids, and in turn, boost your immune system.

uses for hemp seed oil

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS IN HEMP COULD ALSO IMPROVE YOUR MOOD

Yet again, fatty acids have proven an essential component in several studies relating to mood disorders. Supplementing with Omega-3 can improve symptoms of those with bipolar disorder. Other patients who have conditions like ADHD have benefitted from supplementing with Omega-3s. Hemp seed is high in Omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are essential when it comes to mood and regulate the release of neurotransmitters, where neurotransmitters play an essential role in conditions like depression and anxiety.

FATTY ACIDS FOUND IN HEMP ARE VITAL FOR BRAIN HEALTH<

These fatty acids we keep mentioning are essential to the health of your nervous system and brain. The nerves that communicate with your brain are protected by a myelin sheath. Myelin is a conductor that ensures that messages sent from one nerve reach another and their proper destination. Ensuring that you get enough fatty acids will help prevent nervous system and brain degeneration over time. Hemp seed oil is high in these fatty acids which have been shown to protect the brain.

HEMP OIL IS A WOOD VARNISH AND REPLACEMENT FOR PETROLEUM-BASED OILS

Hemp oil has long been used as a wood varnish. Just mix a little of the oil in with lemon oil and apply it over your finished woodwork. Afterwards, buff it out to make your furniture shine. Got a squeaky hinge or a bike chain that’s catching? Hemp oil is an environmentally friendly replacement for petroleum-based oils that are used to quiet these annoyances.

Hemp seed oil has many health-related uses and there are many benefits to adding it to your holistic health plan. In fact, hemp has so many benefits we’ve run out of space in this article. Hemp seed oil can even help you achieve beautiful skin, nails, and hair. It is truly one of nature’s powerhouses.

Even as “true believers” in hemp, sometimes we’re still surprised to learn all the ways cannabidiol (CBD) can help.

Though we know that CBD supplements are used by people with everything from anxiety to arthritis, that was still the case when we first saw reports that it may also be an antipsychotic.

Considered one of several “psychotic disorders,” schizophrenia is a mental illness associated with serious distortions in a person’s thinking, which can include hallucinations or hearing voices. Other symptoms often include depression and difficulty maintaining interest in social activities and hobbies. While conventional pharmaceutical treatments often help, they also often have unpleasant side effects.

could cbd help Schizophrenia
Perhaps because there’s so much stigma associated with mental illness in general, and schizophrenia is notoriously difficult to treat, we’d never have guessed that something as simple as CBD could help. In addition, psychoactive cannabis, a.k.a. “marijuana,” the form of the plant that people ingest to get high, is sometimes believed to make schizophrenia worse.

Nevertheless, when we began to investigate, we found a growing body of scientific evidence that CBD oil could help some schizophrenia sufferers. As always with this kind of article, we’ve looked at both the scientific research into CBD and schizophrenia, while also considering anecdotal reports from everyday CBD consumers.

If you have a mental illness, it’s important that you don’t make changes to your treatment regimen without advice from medical professionals. However, it’s our hope that articles like this one will give people with schizophrenia, and their loved ones, more tools to use in their quest to manage this illness.

‘Effective, Safe & Well-tolerated’: Preliminary Cbd & Schizophrenia Research Is Very Promising

It’s interesting to note that it was actually some of the negative effects of cannabis that helped researchers consider cannabidiol as a potential antipsychotic. Though some of the research associated with this topic is controversial — thanks in large part to the negative atmosphere surrounding all drug research under the War on Drugs — there do seem to be some links between psychotic episodes and cannabis use.

Investigations into this link led to the realization that high-CBD forms of psychoactive cannabis seem to lead to fewer psychotic episodes, as noted in a study published in 2011 by Schizophrenia Research. In 2006, scientists also noted that CBD seemed to reduce artificially induced symptoms of psychosis in both animals and healthy volunteers, according to a study published by the Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research.

Though results are still preliminary, research looking directly at schizophrenia and CBD has been largely positive. In 2015, two scientists, T.A. Iseger and M.G. Bossong, published a systematic review of all CBD and schizophrenia studies in Schizophrenia Research.

The pair concluded, “The first small-scale clinical studies with CBD treatment of patients with psychotic symptoms further confirm the potential of CBD as an effective, safe and well-tolerated antipsychotic compound, although large randomised clinical trials will be needed before this novel therapy can be introduced into clinical practice.”

If CBD can be used as an antipsychotic, it is likely because of the close links between the body’s “endocannabinoid system” (ECS), which provides the body with its own innate cannabis-like chemicals, and mental health. According to a study published in 2014 by Current Pharmaceutical Design, “ECS modulates emotion, reward processing, sleep regulation,” and even the behavior of our adrenal gland and our ability to process traumatic memories. In this light, it becomes less surprising that CBD might help.

As for those controversial ties between cannabis use and psychosis, we’ll defer to this summation written by Arielle Gerard, a medical student writing for “Medical Jane” in 2015:

“Although there is no compelling evidence to support the idea that the use of whole-plant, raw cannabis causes schizophrenia … it is very important to note that use of whole-plant cannabis, especially with higher concentrations of THC … may lead to premature development or exacerbation of schizophrenic symptoms … and therefore should not be used by individuals with a personal or family history of psychotic disorders or conditions that may predispose to psychosis. At this point in time, whole-plant cannabis (regardless of cannabinoid ratio/concentration) is NOT recommended for the treatment of schizophrenia.”

In other words, cannabis probably doesn’t cause psychosis, but people with a family history of psychotic disorders might want to avoid getting high.

‘CBD Made The Voices Stop’: People With Schizophrenia Sound Off On CBD

cbd helps Schizophrenia
After digging through the scientific research, we went looking for first hand accounts and were once again pleasantly surprised at how many schizophrenia sufferers were already experimenting with CBD oil supplements: there were so many CBD discussions on the Schizophrenia subreddit that we didn’t have time to catalog them all!

“CBD made the voices stop,” wrote a redditor named theflexorcist in a post made in May 2017, one of the most recent discussions of the topic on /r/Schizophrenia.

“Even after all the research I’ve done, I was so skeptical,” they wrote. “Honestly. My bf had to convince me to take it. Well after 10 minutes I had almost no psychotic symptoms.”

In response, a redditor named dirtpig replied that CBD had also helped:

“I have been using CBD oil … for a few months now. It works well. For me, the symptoms of schizophrenia are still there, but lessened.”

Redditor too_real_4_TV added, “I’d say it helps with the anxiety and depression as well as the antipsychotic effect.”

Over on the CBD subreddit, redditor 234879 took a somewhat cautious approach to the topic in a discussion started in January. “It is possible CBD could be used as an adjunct treatment but I don’t think it is a cure all for schizophrenia.”

The redditor named pineconeperson1 further noted many studies of CBD alone for treatment of schizophrenia used very high doses, which could be prohibitively expensive. “I took [CBD] previously for psychotic-like symptoms and it definitely helped on all fronts, but I couldn’t afford to take it regularly.”

One of the founders of /r/CBD/, jonathanappleweed, who also has schizophrenia, chimed in excitedly on another thread from 2014. “I created /r/CBD with my buddy last year; I never could have hoped that there would be actual anecdotal evidence for CBD helping with schizophrenia.”

CBD & Schizophrenia: Empowering People To Make Better Choices

As with most mental illnesses, there are no miracle cures for schizophrenia. Many people are able to live happy, productive and healthy lives with this illness and, undoubtedly, modern pharmaceuticals have contributed a lot to this.

But as jonathanappleweed wrote on reddit, “the very worst thing you can possibly do to a schizo person is load them up with drugs and call it a day.” People with schizophrenia need support of trained physicians and caring loved ones, most of all, and most seem best served by diverse treatments that include pharmaceuticals alongside other options from exercise to nutritional supplements like CBD.

We hope readers of this article who have schizophrenia, or know someone who does, will look into the research for themselves and consider all their options for treatment. We believe a person with more knowledge is more empowered to make the right choices for their care.

You can vape it, take an extract, or swallow a pill … but some people find CBD is best applied directly to the skin.

We were curious to learn more about why some CBD consumers are choosing topical applications, such as lotions or massage oils, over other forms of this supplement and found a surprising number of ailments it may help.

While CBD oil, a non-psychedelic extract of industrial hemp, seems to offer healing benefits when ingested almost any way, for some types of chronic pain, skin conditions, and other localized problems, topical applications allow users to go right to the source. Topical CBD can also work faster, since it doesn’t have to travel through the digestive system first.

Just as with our investigations into whether CBD can help chronic pain and anxiety, we’ve looked at the scientific literature on the topic but also looked at reports from everyday people who’ve benefitted from hemp extract.

‘Therapeutic Potential For Relief Of Arthritis’: Science Examines Topical CBD

topical CBD benefits
There’s a lot of research into the overall benefits of CBD in humans, but when it comes to topical applications most of the studies we found used animals.

In July 2016, a team of 7 researchers from the University of Kentucky published the results of their successful study of CBD for relieving arthritis symptoms in rats in the European Journal of Pain. Scientists artificially induced arthritis in the rats’ knee joints, then studied whether CBD improved their mobility and reduced their pain.

“Transdermal CBD gel significantly reduced joint swelling,” the researchers wrote, noting other indicators of pain, including how the rats positioned the affected joints, also seemed improved.

“Exploratory behaviour was not altered by CBD indicating limited effect on higher brain function,” they added, further evidence that CBD has few side effects.

“These data indicate that topical CBD application has therapeutic potential for relief of arthritis pain-related behaviours and inflammation without evident side-effects,” the scientists concluded.

Although perhaps less applicable to everyday applications, other animal studies suggest CBD could reduce many different kinds of inflammation. It’s also worth noting that there are already at least two patents on specific formulations of topical CBD. (Reference here and here.)

‘It’s Reasonable To Think Cbd Might Have Benefits’ But More Research Needed

An April 2016 investigation into topical CBD and cannabis by Medical Marijuana, Inc. summed up some other promising research. “The topical application of cannabinoids allows them to be absorbed directly into the affected area for faster and more focused relief.”

“The topical application of cannabinoids allows them to be absorbed directly into the affected area for faster and more focused relief.”

One benefit, the site noted, was that even topical formulations based on psychoactive cannabis are not mind-altering, because they “bind to CB2 receptors near the skin, activating the endocannabinoid system, and are never absorbed into the bloodstream.”

Beyond simple chronic pain issues, “the topical use of a combination of THC and CBD has been reported as effective against the ‘central pain of multiple sclerosis.'” It may also help with skin conditions, including “burns, rashes, eczema, psoriasis, and skin infections.”

But Medical Marijuana, Inc. also admitted “little research has been done into the application of … cannabinoids transdermally.”

Rachael Schultz, a freelance fitness writer, took a more cautious approach to topical CBD in a January 2017 report for Shape magazine. “There’s practically no scientific data to support the idea that a CBD-infused topical cream is any more effective than other topical pain relievers, like Tiger Balm, BenGay, or Icy Hot,” she warned.

Schultz also speculated that other herbal ingredients found in topical CBD creams could be just as, or more effective than the CBD itself. But the experts she consulted admitted CBD is promising, just largely unproven in human-based laboratory testing.

“The pain and stiffness that comes post-workout or from overexertion certainly has a pro-inflammatory component to it, so it’s reasonable to think CBD or other cannabinoids might have benefits, but we have no research to support this yet,” Gregory Gerdeman, a neurophysiologist and cannabinoid expert at Eckerd College in Saint Petersburg, FL., told Schultz.

‘CBD Has Been The Only Thing That Helped’: Cbd Users Tell Us Why They Go Topical

When we asked the redditors of /r/CBD/ about the topical use of CBD, many were quick to praise its benefits.

Dr. Ranga Krishna, a neurologist from Brooklyn, told us he both prescribes and holds a patent in topical CBD because of its incredible promise.

“Topicals are a fantastic option as they’re easily measured in terms of ingredient compositions, and are higher in bioavailability than orally ingested compounds; this being because they are able to skip liver metabolization,” he wrote.

While he hopes “CBD can really shine” through topical application, he added “we are still doing studies in regards to that.” Eventually, he said he hopes to combine it with other topical pain relievers.

CBD topical skin care
Of course, since everybody is different, topical CBD hasn’t worked for everyone.

“I tried for a stubborn chronic pain problem,” wrote pursehook. “It helped a little, but really not enough for that spot and my pain level.”

Instead, pursehook wrote that they returned to other methods of ingesting CBD that seem to help more. And though topical creams didn’t help with chronic pain, they discovered another, unexpected benefit instead. “I was completely skeptical, but it works like a miracle on [menstrual] cramps. Who knew? Amazing.”

But other redditors were enthusiastic about the benefits of topical CBD. “CBD has been the only thing that has helped,” wrote onwardtomanagua, who suffers from postherpetic neuralgia, a lingering form of chronic pain that can be caused by shingles.

“I use topical salves because I stopped ingesting cannabis, but they still help my muscles and joints when tense or knotted,” wrote kaizoku.

In a separate discussion posted in February, a redditor named ValiumKilmer suggested topical CBD can even help with hemorrhoids.

Topical Cbd Needs More Research, But Don’t Wait To Try It Yourself

Many people have already experienced the benefits of CBD, but science is clearly still catching up. Unfortunately, that’s not unusual: the medical establishment is also still arguing about whether CBD can benefit epilepsy sufferers despite decades of positive research.

That shouldn’t stop you from giving topical CBD a try if you think it might benefit you.

Even Rachael Schultz, Shape’s skeptical CBD investigator, admitted “Science hasn’t confirmed creams with CBD will have any greater benefit than those without, but there’s little-to-no risk in trying it out.”

As with all CBD products, it’s important to investigate your source and make sure they have a proven track record of offering reliable supplements. Whether you have chronic pain, post-workout soreness or just want better skin, we hope you’ll give hemp and CBD a try. Then tell us how it worked for you! Reach us at [email protected].

A closer look at hemp and cannabis quality
We love hemp, but we’re sick of lies and inflated promises about it.

At Ministry of Hemp, we’re dedicated to spreading knowledge about hemp and hemp-based products like CBD oil. But some sites are more concerned with sales than sharing honest, scientific information about hemp.

While thousands of people have experienced the benefits of CBD, it’s not a miracle cure for every disease despite the ridiculous claims some websites make. In other cases, dishonest vendors rely on misleading labelling and inflated pricing to make their products seem more powerful than they really are.

Since there are few regulations concerning hemp and CBD, education is crucial so that consumers can make an informed decision. We hope that by explaining some of the pitfalls and risks faced by CBD and hemp producers in this article, we’ll help buyers make more better choices. While buying CBD oil can be confusing, a little knowledge goes a long way.

‘Dirty Hemp Paste’: Low Quality Cbd Products Threaten Industry Reputation

cannabis quality is a concern

Article from SF Weekly on CBD

In a February 2014 blog post, cannabis activist Mickey Martin warned of a “perfect storm for fraud, corruption, and deception” in the burgeoning CBD oil industry thanks to a lack of regulation over sales.

Chris Roberts agreed with Martin in an editorial published that August by SF Weekly. Dishonest CBD vendors and multi-level marketing schemes, Roberts observed, seek to prey on the vulnerable, like sick people and their relatives, with misleading labeling and inflated claims about hemp extract’s effectiveness. He concluded,

The housewives, the newcomers, the neophytes — they don’t know. All they know is that someone is sick, and there’s maybe a glimmer of hope with something called “CBD.” That glimmer also inspires hucksters, who are making bucks off of vulnerable people in their time of need.

CBD has shown to have many benefits, from easing chronic pain to reducing epileptic seizures that resist other forms of treatment. In Ministry of Hemp articles, we always look for scientific studies that talk about the benefits, limitations, and even side effects of CBD. Unfortunately, as noted by Roberts and Martin, not all sites are so honest.

Poor quality products and misleading labelling have also been a problem for CBD buyers. After Tamar Wise quit her role as head of science for Dixie Botanicals, she unloaded her grievances about her former employer and the industry as a whole on her Facebook page in November 2013.

“Wise said CBD-based products are made from ‘crude and dirty hemp paste’ that is contaminated with microbial life, residual solvents and other toxins,” summarized Marijuana Business Daily.

From Mold To Toxic Pesticides, Impurities Also Found In Cannabis

Just like hemp, toxins and impurities have been found in legal recreational and medicinal cannabis as well, where they’ve occasionally put the health of consumers at risk.

When NBC reporters tested cannabis sold by legal dispensaries in the southern half of California in February, they found that 93 percent showed pesticide levels above the legal maximum set by other states with legal forms of cannabis. Although California isn’t expected to set guidelines for pesticide use until the end of the year, the NBC report forced dispensaries to pull the contaminated products from their shelves.

A similar study by researchers at the University of California at Davis found mold and germs in samples of cannabis purchased at dispensaries in Northern California. The scientists began investigating the problem after reports surfaced that a cancer-patient with a compromised immune system may have died from inhaling contaminated medical marijuana. NBC also found reports of emergency room visits caused by impure cannabis.

Some pesticides can become especially dangerous when inhaled. In 2015, some dispensaries in Denver were forced to remove cannabis products contaminated with myclobutanil, a pesticide sometimes sold under the name “Eagle 20.” While relatively safe for some purposes, Eagle 20 can become cyanide gas when burned, an obvious risk for cannabis smokers and vapers.

Honest Hemp Growers & Fewer Pesticides Offer Better Cbd Options

hemp can offer better options
Neither hemp nor psychoactive cannabis are inherently cleaner, or more prone to toxins than the other. But there are some differences between agricultural hemp and psychoactive cannabis that reduce some of the risks of pesticides.

Hemp is highly adaptable, with numerous varieties available that are perfect for almost any climate on earth. Hemp can be grown in dense, multi-acre plots under minimal care during growing while high-quality psychoactive cannabis grows best in a humid, highly cultivated environment. Hemp requires fewer pesticides and herbicides, especially compared to hydroponically grown cannabis.

The Farm Bill passed by Congress in 2014 legalized hemp growing in the United States for research purposes. While most hemp is still imported from overseas, the discerning consumer can now find CBD oil and other hemp products made from plants grown on American soil. Top quality CBD vendors also offer detailed lab reports on their products, so buyers always know what they’re getting.

Hemp Is Miraculous But Quality Of Source Matters

Hemp is a plant with many miraculous qualities that make it both a great substitute for cotton and a potential treatment for insomnia.

At the same time, just because a product is “natural” doesn’t automatically make it better or safer. With all products, but with hemp in particular, it remains up to the consumer to educate themselves about the best choices before they buy rather than believe all the claims they read online.

While this article may strike a cautionary note, we’re strong believers in the healing potential of hemp. From its potential as a replacement to paper and other everyday consumer products to the way it nourishes the body inside and out, hemp is a great gift to humanity. With a little guidance and education, consumers can make better choices, while increased awareness and progress toward full legalization of hemp should help create initiatives to establish better regulations in this burgeoning industry.

A newly released study adds more scientific evidence that CBD oil can relieve the symptoms of epilepsy.

cbd for epilepsy children

Published May 2017 in the New England Journal of Medicine, the new research focuses on CBD as a treatment for Dravet syndrome, a complex and difficult to treat form of childhood epilepsy.

Worldwide, parents of kids with epilepsy, along with adult sufferers as well, are already using hemp-based CBD extract to great benefit. The medical establishment and the law, however, have been slower to catch up.

While this study offers more ammunition for parents to use to defend their choices, it’s far from the first time scientists have found a link between CBD and treating epilepsy. Below, we’ll look at both the new study and a couple of older ones, and ask why CBD oil has so much trouble gaining acceptance.

Seizures In Dravet Syndrome Kids ‘significantly Reduced’ With CBD Oil

The 9 authors of the study, who call themselves the Cannabidiol in Dravet Syndrome Study Group, examined 120 children or young adults with Dravet, who added CBD to their existing treatment regimens.

First, the researchers counted how many epileptic seizures the children had over the course of a 4 week period to establish a baseline value for each patient. Then, for 14 weeks, the patients each received either 20 mg of CBD oil per day, or a placebo.

The average number of seizures per month decreased from 12.4 to 5.9 in subjects receiving CBD, versus a reduction of just .8 in the control group who took the placebo. Additionally, about 43 percent of the subjects receiving CBD saw their seizures decrease by at least half.

5 percent actually became completely seizure free with CBD, compared with 0 of the controls.

43% of the subjects receiving CBD saw their seizures decrease by at least half.

The scientists also polled the parents using a standardized survey called the Caregiver Global Impression of Change, and found that 62 percent of caregivers felt their children’s conditions had overall improved using CBD oil, versus 34 percent of the control group.

While the placebo effect is certainly powerful, the study shows a clear improvement in kids who took CBD. “Among patients with the Dravet syndrome, cannabidiol resulted in a greater reduction in convulsive-seizure frequency than placebo,” the members of the study group wrote.

However, they also noted that side effects were higher among CBD users, and more patients receiving CBD dropped out of the study than those who received a placebo.

“Adverse events that occurred more frequently in the cannabidiol group than in the placebo group included diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue, pyrexia, somnolence, and abnormal results on liver-function tests.”

While side effects from CBD oil are rare, some of these symptoms are also occasionally reported by adult users.

Past & Current Studies Ignored As Government Cracks Down On CBD

Even before this newest study, evidence has been mounting for years that shows CBD helps people with epilepsy.

Raphael Mechoulam, who was among the research team to first isolate the active ingredients in cannabis, also took part in an important 1980 study into the benefits of CBD oil. Published in the journal Pharmacology, “Chronic administration of cannabidiol to healthy volunteers and epileptic patients” looked at 15 epilepsy patients, with almost all that received CBD showing improvement.

nothing happened after dr raphael mechoulam research

Clip from The Scientist, a documentary on Dr. Raphael Mechoulam’s work on cannabinoids

Despite this promising early work, it took decades — and activism and advocacy by patients already using CBD without doctors’ orders — for further progress around CBD in the medical field.

In a November 2016 article published here at Ministry of Hemp, we looked at about a dozen studies which show the benefits of CBD. Despite this, very few doctors will openly prescribe CBD oil for their patients. Of course, many of them are understandably afraid of prescribing or recommending a substance that remains in a legal gray area.

Despite progress, such as medical cannabis laws and limited CBD-only programs in some states, the Drug Enforcement Agency has made threats against CBD oil in recent months and a few local law enforcement agencies are following suit. While individual consumers of CBD seem safe so far and companies continue to offer hemp oil under the guidelines of the 2014 Farm Bill, it is disconcerting to see random raids on CBD oil such as those in Kansas and Texas.

What Is The Future Of CBD Oil In America?

Currently, the Hemp Industry Association and other allies of hemp are suing the DEA over its ruling on CBD. Many experts are confident that despite the opposition of the federal government, too much progress has been made toward legalization to completely turn back the clock.

Even so, hemp advocates are concerned that the government may continue its needless crackdown on CBD and other forms of cannabis, despite its proven safety and numerous benefits, while simultaneously looking for ways that pharmaceutical companies can profit off it. After all, while the DEA maintains that cannabis has no medical benefit, the U.S. Department of Health actually holds a patent on the application of cannabis and cannabinoids for its antioxidant and neuroprotectant properties.

The evidence is clear to us: countless CBD oil consumers and a raft of scientific studies tell us that CBD can be a safe, and effective treatment for numerous health conditions. We hope that someday soon, the government and mainstream medicine come to their senses and listen to what so many patients are already saying: hemp has healing properties and should be available to everyone.
